Where the River Meets Stone : How Faith Carves Canyons in the Soul

Somewhere along ten miles of trail, a conversation about faith wandered into deeper country. I don’t remember exactly what led us there. That’s often how the most honest conversations happen on a trail. You start by talking about the weather, the climb ahead, the view through the trees, or how many miles remain. Then, somewhere between one switchback and the next, the conversation slips beneath the surface.

Maybe walking does that to us. Your body settles into the rhythm of one foot in front of the other. Your breathing finds a cadence. The usual distractions disappear. There’s no table between you. No clock on the wall. No expectation that you solve anything before you reach the trailhead.

You just walk. And eventually, if you walk long enough with someone you trust, your heart starts walking too.

We were talking about faith when I heard myself say something I had never said before:

Faith carves canyons in your soul.

I didn’t plan the sentence. It simply appeared. But it followed me for the rest of the hike, moving with me beneath the trees and climbing beside me over roots and loose stone. It returned during the quiet stretches between conversations, asking me to pay attention.

Because canyons don’t appear overnight. They form where something persistent meets something resistant.

River meets stone.

Water returns to the same terrain again and again, pressing into fractures, carrying sediment, loosening rock, widening passages, and reshaping a landscape that once looked immovable. Slowly, the stone gives way. The landscape opens. Depth appears where there was once only resistance. And I wonder if faith works the same way.

Faith Is More Than the View from the Summit

We love mountaintop faith. I understand why. We celebrate the answered prayer, the unexpected provision, the relationship restored, the door that finally opened. We tell stories about moments when the clouds parted and suddenly we could see the entire landscape. Those moments matter. I’ve had them.

But I’ve lived long enough to know that most faith doesn’t happen on the summit.

Most faith happens in the canyon.

It happens below the ridgeline, where the walls rise high enough to block the horizon. It happens beside water that keeps moving even when we can’t see where it’s going. It happens when prayers echo off stone and return without an immediate answer. It happens when God seems more interested in deepening us than delivering us.

That kind of faith doesn’t always look victorious. Sometimes faith means returning to prayer after heaven has felt silent. Sometimes it means choosing tenderness after betrayal gives you every reason to become hard. Sometimes it means loving again after loss or opening your hands around an outcome you desperately want to control.

And sometimes faith is simply refusing to abandon the river.

Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed could move a mountain. I believe Him. But I’ve also discovered something else.

Faith doesn’t always move the mountain.

Sometimes faith becomes the river that carves a path through it.

That miracle takes longer.

You can’t photograph it after a weekend retreat. You can’t package it neatly into a testimony with a clear before-and-after picture. Sometimes years pass before you realize anything has changed.

But perhaps that is the deeper miracle.

The mountain remained. The stone remained. The circumstances didn’t suddenly disappear. But grace kept flowing until something inside you opened a way through.

The Slow Work of Water

The geology makes this metaphor even richer…and more complicated.

The Grand Canyon didn’t emerge from one simple geological event. The U.S. Geological Survey describes a landscape shaped through the interaction of tectonic uplift, water, sediment, weathering, and erosion across enormous stretches of time. Recent research has added another piece to the story, suggesting that spillover from an ancient lake may have helped establish part of the Colorado River system that continued shaping the canyon.

I love that because sometimes one event opens the channel, but what follows shapes the canyon.

That feels painfully familiar.

A single loss can change the direction of our lives. One betrayal can fracture something deep inside us. One diagnosis, divorce, death, failure, conversation, or moment of truth can redirect the river.

But the deepest formation happens afterward—day after day, return after return, prayer after prayer.

The canyon keeps becoming.

So do we.

We tend to imagine spiritual transformation as a dramatic encounter. We want lightning on the mountain, a voice from heaven, a single moment that resolves everything.

But most spiritual formation happens through a thousand quiet returns. We return to prayer. We return to Scripture. We return to community, confession, forgiveness, and silence. We return to the same wounds with a little more courage and the same questions with a little more humility.

We come back to the water.

I’ve had prayers I’ve prayed hundreds of times. I’ve placed the same children, relationships, uncertainties, fears, dreams, and unanswered questions into God’s hands more times than I can count.

At times I’ve wondered why I needed to surrender something again when I surrendered it yesterday. But maybe yesterday’s prayer didn’t fail. Maybe faithfulness forms through returning.

The river doesn’t consider itself defeated because the stone remains after one encounter. It just keeps flowing.

I’ve often judged my spiritual growth by how strong I felt in a particular moment. If an old fear returned, I assumed I hadn’t grown. If grief surfaced again, I wondered whether I had somehow walked backward. But rivers bend. They slow into pools. They curl around obstacles. Sometimes they seem to double back on themselves. And still, they move toward somewhere new.

The return of pain doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve returned to the beginning. Sometimes we’re meeting the same wound from a deeper place.

The river reminds me of the same truth: formation rarely happens quickly, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening.

Where the Water Enters

Water does some of its most interesting work through fractures.

It enters small openings in rock. Weathering widens them. Water freezes, expands, dissolves minerals, or weakens the material holding stone together. What looks solid from a distance may already be changing inside.

We spend an enormous amount of energy trying to hide our fractures. We bury grief beneath competence. We disguise fear as control. We cover loneliness with busyness. We call emotional distance strength. We build entire identities around appearing unbroken.

But faith doesn’t require unbroken stone.

It requires access.

The Psalms make that abundantly clear. They aren’t the polished prayers of people pretending they have everything figured out. They rage. They question. They grieve. They celebrate. They accuse God of being absent and then praise Him a few verses later.

The writers didn’t protect God from their emotions.

They opened the fractures.

That kind of vulnerability isn’t the opposite of faith. It may be one of faith’s purest expressions.

Faith isn’t certainty without questions. Faith is trust courageous enough to carry our questions into the presence of God.

There have been seasons when I wanted faith to make me harder. I wanted thicker armor. I wanted enough spiritual toughness to protect myself from disappointment, rejection, misunderstanding, loss, and battles I never asked to fight.

I thought resilience meant becoming harder to hurt.

But God didn’t seem particularly interested in turning me into stronger stone. He kept inviting me toward something softer, more open, more honest; more like water.

That realization has become a recurring theme in my own healing. In The Soft Heart, I wrote that tenderness isn’t fragility; it is what becomes possible when we stop confusing emotional armor with strength. Maybe the river can shape us precisely because it remains soft enough to move.

He kept asking me to feel what I wanted to outrun, grieve what I couldn’t repair, and surrender outcomes I couldn’t control. He didn’t always change the circumstances that wounded me. Instead, He began changing the shape of the man carrying them.

And that process rarely felt beautiful while it was happening.

When Formation Feels Like Loss

We admire canyons because we arrive after the carving.

We stand at the overlook and call the exposed layers beautiful. We photograph the colors. We trace the river far below and marvel at what water and time have created.

But we never stand there mourning all the rock that used to occupy the empty space.

The canyon experiences formation as removal.

That thought stays with me because we ask God to transform us, but transformation almost always involves losing something.

Sometimes faith erodes our illusion of control. Sometimes it dismantles an identity built around being needed. Sometimes it chips away at our need for approval or removes the armor that once protected us but now prevents anyone from reaching us.

Sometimes faith dismantles the quiet theology we carried that said if we were good enough, faithful enough, prayerful enough, or obedient enough, nothing truly terrible would happen.

When those pieces break loose, spiritual growth can feel strangely similar to spiritual failure. Something familiar disappears. The terrain shifts beneath us. The map we used before stops making sense.

But perhaps faith isn’t failing. Perhaps it has finally reached the stone beneath our religious language.

Psychologists use the term psychological flexibility to describe our capacity to stay present with difficult thoughts and emotions while continuing to act according to deeply held values. I find something deeply spiritual in that idea. Psychological flexibility doesn’t mean pretending pain doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t mean calling injustice good, suppressing anger, or smiling while your world falls apart.

It means pain can ride in the canoe without being allowed to steer it. Grief can exist without becoming our entire identity. Fear can speak without becoming our compass. Uncertainty can remain without keeping us frozen at the trailhead.

Mature faith gives us room to tell the truth about the current while continuing to trust the river.

The God We Meet in the Canyon

Research on religious coping adds another layer. Research shows that religious coping can support emotional resilience partly through cognitive reappraisal and greater confidence in one’s ability to cope. Religious coping also buffers the relationship between daily stress and negative emotion in their study.

But faith doesn’t automatically make suffering easier.

The kind of faith we carry matters.

If our theology convinces us that every painful event proves God is angry, distant, or punishing us, religion can become another stone in our pack. If we imagine God standing safely above the rim, disappointed that we haven’t climbed out of the canyon yet, faith becomes another burden.

But that isn’t the God I find in the Christian story.

I find a God who enters the canyon.

Jesus wept. Jesus grieved. Jesus became exhausted. Jesus asked for the cup to pass from Him. Jesus cried from the cross.

Christianity doesn’t give us a Savior shouting instructions from the overlook. It gives us Emmanuel; God with us. God in the valley. God in the grief. God entering the current and refusing to abandon us there.

Even resurrection didn’t erase Christ’s wounds.

He still carried scars.

Maybe scars aren’t evidence that faith failed. Maybe sometimes they become openings through which love becomes believable.

A Soul Made Spacious

There’s another way to look at a canyon.

A canyon doesn’t merely reveal what disappeared. It reveals what the removal made possible.

The carving creates capacity.

The canyon becomes spacious enough to hold a river. It shelters life. It exposes history. It reveals layers of the earth that the unbroken surface kept hidden.

Its depth tells a story the surface never could.

I think faith can create that kind of capacity in us.

It can deepen our ability to sit beside suffering we cannot fix. It can widen compassion. It can teach us to hold grief and gratitude inside the same heart. It can make room for mystery without demanding an immediate explanation. It can teach us how to stand beside another person in the canyon without shouting directions from the ridge.

Psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun gave researchers language for something similar when they developed the concept of post-traumatic growth. Their work identified several areas where people sometimes report meaningful change after struggling with deeply challenging experiences, including relationships, personal strength, appreciation of life, new possibilities, and spiritual change.

But we need to handle this idea carefully.

Suffering does not automatically make people stronger.

Trauma isn’t a gift.

Loss doesn’t become good because something meaningful eventually grows around it.

Growth, when it comes, emerges through our struggle with what happened; not because what happened was somehow necessary or beautiful. The canyon can be breathtaking and still have been carved through violence.

Both truths can remain.

That matters because people of faith sometimes rush toward redemption so quickly that we step over lament. We want to discover the lesson before we’ve honored the loss. We quote Romans 8:28 while someone is still bleeding, as though explaining the trail is the same thing as walking it beside them.

Jesus didn’t do that. When Lazarus died, Jesus knew resurrection stood only moments away. And He still wept. He allowed grief its place in the story. There’s something profoundly holy about that. Faith doesn’t have to rush sorrow out of the room to make space for hope. A deep soul can hold both.

Maybe that is what the canyon represents. Grief hollows something out, and grace refuses to waste the space. What once felt like emptiness slowly becomes capacity. The absence becomes a channel. The wound becomes a place where compassion gathers. The unanswered question becomes a basin capable of holding mystery. Not because pain was good. But because God remained.

The River Keeps Returning

When I think about the strongest faith I’ve witnessed, I don’t think first about loud certainty.

I think about people who kept returning. People who returned to love after betrayal. People who returned to prayer after disappointment. People who returned to community after being wounded by people who claimed God’s name. People who returned to tenderness after life taught them hardness might feel safer.

Their faith didn’t impress me because it never faltered. It moved me because somewhere beneath the doubt, anger, grief, and exhaustion, the river kept flowing. Some days it rushed. Other days it narrowed to a trickle. But it remained.

That kind of resilience rarely looks dramatic. Sometimes perseverance means whispering a three-word prayer. Sometimes it means showing up for therapy, calling a friend instead of isolating, or opening Scripture when you aren’t sure what you believe that day.

Sometimes it means refusing to let today’s pain write tomorrow’s values. Small acts of trust become water over stone. Again and again. Eventually something changes.

Maybe not the situation. Maybe not the person who hurt us. Maybe not the diagnosis or the past. But us.

Grain by grain, fear loses a little authority. Shame loosens its grip. The desperate need to control every outcome slowly gives way to surrender; not resignation, but the willingness to entrust what we cannot carry to Someone who can.

Then one day, perhaps years later, we look backward and notice something we couldn’t see while standing inside the process.

There’s a passage where there used to be stone.

We didn’t escape the landscape.

Faith reshaped it.

What the Canyon Bears Witness To

A canyon is a record.

Its walls expose layers of history that existed long before anyone stood at the rim to admire them.

Our souls carry layers too.

There are places in us shaped by prayers nobody heard, battles nobody watched, grief hidden beneath laughter, and miles of perseverance beneath accomplishments other people casually call luck.

We sometimes wish we could hide those layers. But maybe our depth is part of our witness.

Not every wound belongs on display. Vulnerability without wisdom can become exposure rather than intimacy. But wounds that have healed enough can become shelter.

The trail we barely survived may become the one we know well enough to guide someone else through.

Our canyons can become cairns.

They can mark a path for the next traveler. They can quietly say:

The river found a way through here.

And maybe that is one of faith’s greatest transformations. It doesn’t merely help us survive our own suffering. It enlarges our capacity to accompany someone else through theirs. The terrain that once terrified us becomes terrain we know how to walk. We stop rushing people. We stop trying to fix every grief. We stop shouting instructions from the summit.

Instead, we climb down into the canyon. We sit beside the river, and we say in whatever words feel right: You don’t have to walk this part alone.

Where the River Meets Stone

I keep returning to that sentence from the trail.

Faith carves canyons in your soul.

I believe it because I’ve felt both the river and the stone.

I know the hard places in myself. Fear, anger, grief, disappointment, and the desperate desire to control an outcome so I won’t have to feel what might happen if I can’t.

But I also know the stubborn persistence of grace. Not always as an answer. Not always as rescue. Sometimes grace has simply arrived as enough strength for the next step. Maybe that is how canyons begin. Not with spectacle, but with contact.

Water meeting stone. Trust meeting fear. Grace meeting the wound. God meeting us exactly where we believed nothing could change.

Perhaps the deepest faith doesn’t belong to the person who somehow avoided hardship. Maybe it belongs to the person whose interior landscape bears witness to the river. Cut deeply by loss, widened by grace, softened by vulnerability, and made spacious enough to carry hope through places where stone once stood.

So if your faith feels less like standing on a summit right now and more like walking through a canyon, don’t assume you’re lost.

If the walls feel high and the trail disappears around the next bend, listen for the water. If grief has fractured places you once believed were strong, don’t be ashamed of the openings. If transformation feels painfully slow, remember that rivers measure progress differently than we do.

Ask yourself:

What stone am I still trying to force out of the way?
Where might God be inviting me to keep flowing instead?
What part of me has hardship hollowed out; and what might that new space someday hold?
Where have wounds given me the ability to walk more gently beside someone else?
And where do I simply need to return to the water one more time?

You may not be stuck. You may still be becoming. The landscape may still be opening. Because faith doesn’t always move the mountain. Sometimes faith becomes the river.

And over time, it carves a way through.
