Sometimes someone says something so simple that it stops you in your tracks. There’s no polished language, carefully constructed insight, or attempt to sound profound. Just a sentence.
Today at Cedar Ridge, I was talking with one of the residents about some of the decisions that had brought him there. Like a lot of young men telling stories they probably aren’t quite ready to feel yet, he carried some of those stories with bravado. Pride mixed with regret. Humor covered consequences. A little swagger wrapped around experiences that, if you sat with them long enough, probably contained more pain than he wanted anyone to see.
I’ve learned not to rush those conversations. Sometimes bravado is just armor, so I listened.
Somewhere along the way, our conversation shifted from the decisions he had made to the glasses sitting on his face. I don’t remember exactly how we got there, but he told me he had never worn glasses before being locked up. He hadn’t realized how poor his eyesight actually was.
Then he said something I haven’t been able to stop thinking about:
“I thought blurry vision was normal vision. I didn’t get glasses until I got locked up and realized how bad my vision was.”
I sat with that for a moment because suddenly, at least for me, we weren’t talking about glasses anymore.
I started thinking about how easily we can spend years navigating a blurry life without ever realizing the world was supposed to look different. We can spend so long walking through fog that eventually we stop believing there is anything beyond it.
When the Fog Feels Normal
If you have never seen clearly, how would you know your vision is blurry?
That’s the part of his statement that struck me hardest. He didn’t wake up every morning thinking something was wrong with his eyesight. He simply opened his eyes and saw the world. That was reality.
Trees looked the way trees looked. Words at a distance looked the way words looked. Faces looked the way faces looked. The horizon stretched only as far as his eyes allowed him to see. His brain learned to navigate what his eyes gave it.
He didn’t know what he couldn’t see.
The more I thought about that, though, the more another part of his story bothered me. He’s a teenager. Somehow, he made it this far through childhood believing blurry vision was simply how everyone saw the world.
I want to be careful here because I don’t know the whole story. I don’t know every person who cared for him, what resources they had, what pressures they carried, or how something like this went unnoticed. It would be unfair to turn one conversation into an indictment of the people who raised him.
But I do think it reveals something worth sitting with.
What Children Cannot Name
Children depend on adults to notice things they cannot yet recognize for themselves. A child who has always seen blurry doesn’t know to say, I need glasses. Someone has to notice the squint, ask whether he can read the board, or wonder why he struggles to recognize something in the distance.
Someone has to help him discover that what feels normal to him might not actually be normal.
That realization carries a sadness for me, not because I know who failed or why (I don’t) but because somewhere along the trail, a need went unseen. And I wonder how many other needs can remain unseen in exactly the same way.
A kid may not know that constantly feeling unsafe isn’t normal. He may not know that adults are supposed to be dependable, that anger doesn’t have to dominate a home, or that someone should ask how he’s doing and stay long enough to hear the real answer. He may not know that asking for help is something people are allowed to do.
Sometimes children cannot name what is missing because they have never experienced enough of it to know it should be there.
That’s part of what makes caring for young people such sacred work. Adults often have to see what a child cannot yet see.
The Sacred Work of Noticing
We notice. We ask questions. We pay attention. We look beyond behavior and become curious about what might sit underneath it.
We do that not because every difficult choice can be traced back to something another person failed to do. That would strip young people of their agency just as surely as blaming them for everything would ignore the terrain they’ve traveled. Both things can be true: young people make choices for which they bear responsibility, and those choices develop within environments that help shape what they believe is possible.
Children grow inside ecosystems of care.
Sometimes one of the most consequential things an adult can do is simply notice; the squint, the struggle, the anger, the silence, the ability nobody has named yet, or the dream buried beneath all that fog.
Sometimes care begins there.
Not with fixing someone, but with seeing them.
The Lenses We Learn to Live Through
I wonder how often we do exactly the same thing emotionally.
If chaos surrounded you from childhood, chaos may not feel chaotic. It may simply feel like home. If people regularly disappointed you, distrust can start to feel like wisdom. If anger protected you, anger can begin to feel like strength. If nobody consistently showed up for you, depending only on yourself can feel safer than connection.
And if the people around you communicated—directly or indirectly—that you weren’t smart, capable, worthy, lovable, or going anywhere, those messages can eventually stop sounding like opinions.
They start sounding like eyesight.
You simply assume that’s what the world looks like.
Research into adverse childhood experiences helps explain why this matters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that prolonged childhood adversity and toxic stress can affect developing stress-response systems, brain development, attention, learning, and decision-making. Those early environments don’t simply leave us with memories. They can influence how we learn to interpret danger, relationships, opportunity, and ourselves.
That doesn’t mean trauma determines someone’s future. It means we should take seriously the lens through which someone first learned to see it.
There’s an important difference.
Same Mountain, Different View
Too often, we stand in the clarity of our own vantage point, look at someone else’s choices, and ask, How could they not see where this was going?
Maybe sometimes they couldn’t. Or at least they couldn’t see it the way we could.
If you stand on an overlook thousands of feet above a valley, you can see a trail winding through the trees below. From that elevation, every switchback looks obvious. You can see where the creek bends, where the trail disappears behind the ridge, and where it eventually climbs toward the summit.
Put someone underneath that canopy and everything changes.
They may only see twenty yards ahead. Add fog, and they may barely see the next trail marker.
Same mountain. Different view.
I’ve spent enough time hiking, climbing, kayaking, and wandering around places where cell service disappears to know how much vision matters when you’re trying to figure out where you’re going. Some trails let you see the summit almost the entire way. Your legs may burn and the elevation may steal your breath, but you can still look up, find the ridge, and remind yourself where you’re headed.
Other trails disappear beneath dense canopy or fog. Sometimes you can’t see beyond the next switchback.
You keep walking because the trail gives you enough information to take another step.
Life works much the same way.
We Learn to Navigate What We Can See
Psychologists Hazel Markus and Paula Nurius introduced the idea of possible selves to describe the people we imagine ourselves becoming: the people we hope to become, expect to become, or fear becoming. Their research connected those imagined futures with motivation and behavior because the future we can picture helps give direction to what we do now.
I find that idea incredibly important when working with young people.
We spend a lot of time telling kids to make better choices. And they should. Choices matter. One decision creates conditions for another, and over time those decisions can spread through a life until the entire landscape changes.
But underneath all those choices sits another question that I think we sometimes overlook:
What future can this young person actually see?
It’s difficult to walk toward a summit you don’t believe exists.
Think about the futures we routinely ask teenagers to build toward: graduating, learning a trade, building a career, managing money, creating healthy relationships, controlling anger, becoming dependable, trusting people, and building something instead of destroying something.
Maybe one day they’ll become present husbands or fathers, trusted employees, mentors, neighbors, leaders, or friends.
Those possibilities can sound perfectly ordinary to someone who grew up watching adults live them.
But what if you didn’t?
When the Summit Is Outside Your Field of Vision
What if nobody close to you modeled that kind of life? What if those possibilities existed somewhere beyond the range of your emotional eyesight?
Then the life immediately around you can begin to feel like the only life available.
You don’t necessarily choose the fog because you prefer it. Sometimes you make choices inside the fog because you don’t yet know anything exists beyond it.
That idea has stayed with me because we often assume people reject possibilities they may never have learned to imagine in the first place. We tell young people to “think about their future” without asking what their experiences have taught them to expect from that future.
What does adulthood look like from where they stand?
What does success look like? Trust? Family? Work? Faithfulness? Stability?
Before someone can walk toward a different life, they often need to believe a different life exists.
That doesn’t remove responsibility. It gives responsibility a horizon.
And sometimes that horizon appears because someone finally helps us see farther than we could see on our own.
Then Someone Hands You Glasses
I keep imagining the first time this young man put on prescription glasses. Anyone who has needed corrective lenses probably remembers some version of that moment.
Edges sharpen. Letters emerge. Individual leaves suddenly appear on trees. Things that once melted together separate into detail.
But here’s what I find remarkable: the glasses didn’t change anything outside him.
The trees already had leaves. The signs already contained words. The mountains already had ridgelines. The horizon had always stretched farther than he could see.
The world didn’t change. His ability to see it did.
Maybe that’s one of the most important forms of transformation available to us.
Sometimes we spend years asking for a different landscape when what we desperately need is a different lens. We want the mountain removed when we may need enough clarity to see the trail through it. We want our history erased when we may need someone to help us understand that our history doesn’t have to become our destiny.
We want our circumstances to change when sometimes the first thing that changes is our ability to imagine something beyond them.
That’s what good mentors, teachers, counselors, coaches, healthy friends, and faith communities can do.
They can help us see.
Becoming a Corrective Lens
Sometimes one steady person who refuses to reduce you to the worst thing you’ve ever done becomes a kind of corrective lens.
They don’t magically remove every obstacle from the trail. They help you notice possibilities that previously disappeared into the fog.
Someone says, You know you’re good at this, right?
A teacher says, You’re smarter than you think.
A coach says, I expect more from you because I know you’re capable of more.
A therapist helps you recognize that something you called normal for twenty years was actually survival. A friend shows you that disagreement doesn’t have to end in abandonment. A mentor helps you understand that your past may explain some of your behavior without giving you permission to keep repeating it.
Slowly, the image sharpens.
Maybe I could finish school. Maybe I could learn a trade. Maybe anger isn’t my only defense. Maybe vulnerability doesn’t always end in betrayal. Maybe what happened to me can remain part of my story without becoming its ending.
Maybe there is more trail ahead.
That’s more than positive thinking.
That’s vision.

Hope Needs a Horizon
Psychologist C. R. Snyder spent much of his career studying hope, and his work offers a useful way to understand why vision matters. Snyder didn’t describe hope as simply wishing things would get better. His theory centers on two ideas: agency and pathways.
Agency involves believing we can move toward something meaningful. Pathways involve our ability to imagine routes for getting there, including another route when the first one becomes blocked.
In other words, hope sounds less like I hope my life gets better and more like: There is somewhere worth going. There may be a way to get there. And I believe I can take the next step.
I love that because it sounds a lot like navigating in the wilderness.
You need a destination and a route. Then you need enough belief to start walking.
Take away any one of those and you have a problem. A destination without a route becomes fantasy. A route without a destination becomes wandering. A destination and route without agency leave you standing at the trailhead staring at the map.
Maybe that’s why blurry vision matters so much.
If you can’t imagine a future clearly enough to name it, how do you build a route toward it?
Accountability Needs a Trail
If every trail you’ve ever walked ended somewhere painful, why would you automatically believe this one leads somewhere different?
That’s why telling someone to “make better choices” can sometimes fall painfully short.
Accountability matters. Consequences matter. Character matters. Discipline matters. Compassion doesn’t require us to pretend choices don’t have consequences.
But accountability without vision can become little more than someone standing beside the trail shouting, Stop going that way!
Okay.
Then show me another way.
Better yet, walk beside me long enough that I learn how to recognize the trail myself.
That may be one of the most important things we can offer young people: not rescue from responsibility, but enough relationship, structure, encouragement, and perspective to help them see choices they didn’t recognize before.
We cannot walk the trail for them. Eventually, every person has to decide where to place the next foot.
But there’s a meaningful difference between making that decision in total darkness and making it after someone has handed you a map.

The Strange Place Where He Finally Saw Clearly
There is an irony in this young man’s story that I can’t ignore.
He had to get locked up before someone discovered that he couldn’t see.
There’s something heartbreaking about that. The place he came to because of decisions he made became the place where somebody finally gave him glasses.
I don’t want to romanticize that. Consequences aren’t beautiful simply because something useful occasionally grows inside them. Pain is still pain. Loss is still loss. Separation from family, freedom, community, and the life you knew carries a real cost.
But I’ve spent enough time outdoors to know that sometimes a trail forces us through terrain we never would have chosen. A storm makes us stop. A flooded river forces us to reconsider a crossing. A wrong turn finally makes us pull out the map. A steep ridge exposes weaknesses we could ignore on level ground.
Sometimes interruption creates awareness.
Maybe that can happen here too.
Cedar Ridge cannot rewrite someone’s childhood. We cannot erase trauma or undo the decisions that brought a young person through the doors. Nobody working there can guarantee what happens after a resident leaves.
But maybe we can help clean a lens.
Helping Someone See Another Ridge
Maybe we can notice something nobody else had the chance, capacity, or information to notice before. Maybe we can point toward a ridge he couldn’t see and help him imagine one more possible version of himself.
Student. Employee. Craftsman. Leader. Husband. Father. Friend. Neighbor. Mentor.
Someone younger kids look up to for the right reasons.
Maybe our work isn’t convincing him that the mountain suddenly became easy. Maybe it’s helping him see that more trails cross it than he thought.
That distinction matters to me because care doesn’t mean pretending the terrain isn’t difficult. Hope isn’t denial, and compassion isn’t permission to avoid responsibility.
Sometimes hope simply helps us see enough of the landscape to choose differently.
Someone can show you the trailhead, but they cannot make you hike.
Someone can hand you glasses, but they cannot choose what you look toward.
Which brings us to the other half of this story.
Clarity creates opportunity.
It doesn’t make our decisions for us.
Clear Vision Still Doesn’t Walk the Trail
Getting glasses didn’t decide where this resident looked, and seeing clearly won’t decide where he walks. That’s where responsibility enters the story.
I can hand someone a map, point toward the trail, show them the summit, pack their gear, and tell them everything I’ve learned from walking similar terrain.
Eventually, they still have to put one boot in front of the other.
The same holds true for every one of us.
At some point, personal growth asks us to stop blaming the blur for every wrong turn once we have begun to see more clearly.
There are things I normalized in my own life because I didn’t know any different: ways of thinking, coping, protecting myself, patterns I carried into relationships, and stories I believed about myself.
Some of those patterns made sense when I learned them.
That doesn’t mean they deserve permanent residency in my life.
This is one of the harder tensions of emotional maturity:
We can have compassion for why we learned something while still accepting responsibility for unlearning it.
The lens explains.
It doesn’t excuse.
Learning to See Again
Once you recognize that your vision has been distorted, you face a choice. You can keep insisting the blurry world was accurate, or you can learn to see again.
And sometimes that hurts.
If you’ve spent years believing people always leave, trusting someone can feel dangerous. If anger helped you survive, gentleness can feel weak. If chaos feels familiar, peace can feel strangely uncomfortable. If failure became part of your identity, opportunity can feel suspicious.
Clarity doesn’t always feel comfortable because clarity sometimes threatens the stories that helped us survive.
But surviving and living aren’t always the same thing.
Eventually, we have to ask whether the tools that carried us through yesterday can carry us into tomorrow.
That’s true for the teenager sitting across from me at Cedar Ridge, but it’s also true for me. It’s true for anyone who has ever discovered that an old defense, belief, relationship pattern, or story no longer fits the life they’re trying to build.
Personal growth often begins when we stop asking only, Why am I like this? and start asking, Now that I can see it, what am I going to do with it?
What Have You Mistaken for Normal?
I’ve thought about that young man’s glasses all day, mostly because his story isn’t just his.
His version may be more visible, but every one of us sees through lenses shaped by family, pain, love, loss, faith, rejection, success, failure, culture, relationships, fear, and hope. We collect those lenses over a lifetime, and eventually we forget we’re wearing them.
That’s when blurry vision becomes dangerous.
Not because any of us sees perfectly. Nobody does. It becomes dangerous when we stop questioning whether what we’re seeing represents the whole picture.
Maybe you’ve normalized a relationship that constantly diminishes you. Maybe you’ve normalized anxiety so completely that you can’t remember what peace feels like. Maybe you’ve normalized anger because sadness feels too vulnerable, or loneliness because you’ve convinced yourself you don’t need anyone.
Maybe you’ve normalized disappointment and stopped expecting anything beautiful. Maybe you’ve normalized failure and quietly lowered the horizon of your own life.
Maybe you’ve spent so long surviving that survival has become your definition of living.
So maybe the question isn’t simply, What do I see?
Maybe the better question is: What if what I’m seeing isn’t all there is?
Brave Questions Become Trail Markers
There may be more detail in the landscape. More trails across the mountain. More depth beyond the horizon. More possibility in you.
Sometimes one of the bravest things we can do is allow another person, therapy, faith, education, reflection, consequences, or a new experience to challenge the prescription we’ve been wearing.
We can become curious enough to ask:
Is this actually true, or is this simply what I’ve always known?
Is this who I am, or is this who I learned to become in order to survive?
Is this really where my trail ends, or have I simply never been able to see beyond this bend?
Those aren’t easy questions, but brave questions often become trail markers. They tell us where we are and sometimes help us discover where we might go next.
Self-discovery rarely happens because someone hands us every answer. More often, it happens when enough light reaches the trail for us to ask a better question.
We look again.
We notice something we missed.
Then we take another step.
That kind of self-examination requires more than curiosity. It requires courage. The willingness to ask a question even when the answer might change the way we understand ourselves. Beyond the Fog
I don’t know what this young man will eventually do with his life. I don’t know which choices he’ll make after Cedar Ridge or whether he’ll remember our conversation about his glasses a year from now, five years from now, or ever.
But I know I’ll remember it because he gave me a sentence that describes something profoundly human:
“I thought blurry vision was normal vision.”
Maybe transformation often begins somewhere inside that realization; not with certainty, a perfect plan, or even immediate change, but with the unsettling discovery that the world might be larger than we thought.
Maybe the future contains possibilities we never learned to imagine. Maybe there are dreams hidden somewhere beyond the fog because nobody ever taught us to look for them. Maybe the story we inherited does not have to be the story we finish.
The mountain may still be steep. The river may still run hard. The trail may disappear around another bend, and the fog may not lift all at once.
But suddenly we can see a little farther.
And seeing farther changes something.
A Horizon Changes the Journey
A horizon gives us somewhere to aim. It gives us the possibility of choosing our next step instead of blindly repeating the last one.
Maybe that’s part of what we owe one another.
We don’t have to walk someone else’s trail for them, rescue people from every consequence, or pretend the mountains aren’t real. But when we encounter someone who has spent their whole life believing the fog is all there is, maybe we can help them see a little farther.
We can pay attention to what has gone unnoticed. We can point toward something they haven’t seen yet. We can remind them to look again.
There are leaves on those trees.
There are trails across that mountain.
There are dreams hidden in places you haven’t learned to look yet.
There is more beyond this ridge.
Then, rather than dragging them toward it, we can do something much harder and much more human: we can stand beside them while their eyes adjust.
Because sometimes care begins with noticing, and sometimes hope begins with seeing.
Sometimes the world doesn’t need to change before someone’s life begins to change. Sometimes they simply need to discover that the fog was never the whole landscape.
The horizon was always there.
They just needed a clearer lens to finally see it.
