The Geography of Healing: Healing, Love, and the Permission to Begin Again

Healing, I’ve learned, isn’t a finish line you cross; it’s a trail that never really ends.
It winds, it doubles back, it disappears in fog, and just when you think you’ve reached the top, the clouds shift and you see another ridge rising in the distance.

For years, I thought healing meant arrival. That if I worked hard enough, prayed long enough, reflected deep enough, I’d finally stand on some emotional summit. The air clean, the past behind me, my heart steady enough to love without trembling.

But that isn’t how it works. Healing, it turns out, is less like conquering a mountain and more like walking the Appalachian Trail. A two-thousand mile stretch of grace and grit that keeps revealing new faces of you with every mile.

And sometimes, the mountain changes your plans.

The Microburst

A few summers ago, my friend Karl and I hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail.
We packed light. No tent, and no rain gear because the forecast promised clear skies. But somewhere past Raven Rocks, the air changed. The woods went silent. Then came the wind, sharp and sudden, and within seconds the sky cracked open. Rain came sideways, lightning split the ridge, and the trail turned into a river.

We ran for cover, laughing at first, then yelling over the thunder, until we crouched beneath the canopy of some trees. Soaked, shivering, and completely powerless.

All we could do was wait.

There’s something humbling about being caught in a storm you didn’t plan for. You can’t reason with it. You can’t outpace it. The mountain doesn’t care that you read the forecast. It asks a different question:

Now that control is gone, who are you?

That night changed the way I think about healing.

Storms have a way of uncovering what we thought we’d mastered. Sometimes the storm is what we need.

When the Forecast Lies

Healing is like that storm. You can do everything “right;” therapy, prayer, reflection, and still get drenched by something you didn’t see coming.

For a long time, I believed healing meant learning how to prevent pain.
But the longer I walk this trail, the more I realize: healing isn’t about eliminating storms, it’s about learning how to stay present when they come.

Avoidance doesn’t protect us; it prolongs our suffering. Dan Siegel, a clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, describes health as integration; linking the differentiated parts of ourselves into a functional whole. When trauma fragments us, healing asks us to turn toward the parts we’ve exiled and bring them back into connection.

Bessel van der Kolk puts it plainly in The Body Keeps the Score:

“Trauma victims cannot recover until they become familiar with and befriend the sensations in their bodies.”

So maybe the storm isn’t punishment. Maybe it’s permission to meet ourselves in the dark and remember that wholeness isn’t about being untouched; it’s about being willing to stay.

The Myth of “Healed First”

After my own heart was broken open by loss, I spent years believing I wasn’t ready for love.
I told myself, Once I’m healed, I’ll try again. Once I stop aching, once I stop flinching, once I can trust without fear, then I’ll be worthy.

But healing doesn’t work that way. It isn’t a prerequisite for love. It’s the landscape love grows in.

Brené Brown reminds us,

“Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up when you can’t control the outcome.”

That’s love. Not perfect timing, not complete recovery, but showing up anyway.

I once had a friend who was stepping back into dating after his divorce, and he asked me a question that caught me off guard:

 “Do you think you’re fully healed from yours?”

I paused before answering. “I think there are things that absolutely needed healing before I could move into something new,” I told him. “But there are other parts of me that will always be healing. That’s just being human.”

We don’t need to be fully healed to be whole. And we don’t need to be whole to be in a relationship.

Sometimes, the relationship itself becomes part of the healing; not because another person fixes us, but because love has a way of holding the mirror gently. It shows us the places still tender, still growing, still capable of grace.

Healing happens in connection, not isolation.

Judith Herman, whose pioneering research on trauma recovery shaped the field, wrote that “Recovery can take place only within the context of relationships; it cannot occur in isolation.”
Our nervous systems regulate through safety and belonging. We don’t heal by retreating from life; we heal by letting life and people meet us gently where we are.

When someone sees me (really see me) with all the dents and weather marks still visible, I learn again that I’m not too broken to be loved. And when I meet someone else in their own unfinished story, I’m reminded that love isn’t a rescue mission; it’s a shared trail.

After the Storm

When the rain finally eased that night with Karl, we stepped out from under the canopy.
The world was quiet again; that strange, holy quiet that follows chaos.
Steam rose from the trees. Every leaf dripped. The trail glistened like a vein of silver under the sunlight. 

We were cold, drenched, and grinning like fools.

We hadn’t made it to the overlook. But the beauty that came after; that soaked, shimmering peace was worth every drop.

Healing feels like that sometimes. You lose what you thought you were building, you end up somewhere unexpected, and somehow it’s still good.
The air feels different after surrender. The light softer. You realize the goal was never to reach a summit but to learn reverence for the climb itself.

What the Trail Teaches

The Appalachian Trail runs from Maine to Georgia. One continuous path that passes through fourteen states and more kinds of terrain than you can imagine. In the north, it’s granite and fog. In Virginia, long ridges and green tunnels. In Georgia, red clay and rain.
It’s all one trail, yet it feels like many worlds.

Healing is the same. Each season of your life reveals a different landscape of yourself. One year it’s forgiveness. The next, boundaries. Then grief. Then joy you didn’t expect.

Healing doesn’t mean you stop hurting. It means pain no longer drives the hike.

Every stage of healing asks something new of us:

• When the ground is steep, patience.
• When it’s smooth, gratitude.
• When it’s storming, surrender.
• When it’s beautiful, awe.
  

And at every mile marker, the mountain asks the same quiet question:
Who are you now?

Not “Are you healed yet?” Not “Are you ready for love?”
Just “Who are you now, in this breath, on this ridge, under this sky?”

The answer keeps changing, and that’s how you know you’re alive.

The Campfire

The next morning Karla and I sat in silence for a long time, clothes steaming in the heat, breath visible in the cool air. Everything smelled like earth and rain.

I thought about how the day hadn’t gone as planned; how it never does, really.
And yet, there we were: alive, laughing, fed by something larger than control.

That’s healing. Not perfection. Not arrival.
Just this: the quiet miracle of still being here, still open, still capable of wonder after the storm has passed through you.

Maybe love works the same way. Maybe it isn’t the reward for having healed, but the fire that helps us keep healing; a small light we tend together against the dark.

You don’t have to be finished to be found.

The truth is, we are all hikers in borrowed light. Some days we walk with confidence, other days we crawl. But as long as there’s breath in us, we can keep moving, keep learning, keep softening.

You don’t need to be healed to love again.
You just need to be willing to walk with your heart unarmored. Willing to trust that even unfinished people can hold beauty, that even broken branches can burn bright.

The Trail That Never Ends

When people ask me how long healing takes, I think about that trail.
How it winds from one border to another. Same path, different ground. You don’t finish it; you walk it as far as you can, and then you rest.

Healing is the same. Love is the same.
You’ll keep discovering new parts of yourself, new weather, new reasons to begin again.

The goal isn’t to arrive whole. It’s to walk with reverence for the wholeness that’s already carrying you.

So tonight, as I think of every person who still feels unready, unworthy, unfinished. Who’s waiting to be “healed enough” to love again.

Here’s what I want to tell you:
You are already on the trail.
You’ve been walking it all along.
And somewhere ahead, the light is waiting; not at the summit, but in the quiet places where the mountain meets your heart.

So rest when you need to. Laugh when it rains.
And when you’re ready, start walking again.

The trail never ends… and neither does grace.
